WANG QINGSONG, "KNICKNACK PEDDLAR", 2002, c-print, 24" x 80", collection of Joe Baio, New York.

“Williamsburg Bridges Asia”

On view Thru October 26

Cristine Wang is pleased to announce the inaugural exhibition of its new gallery space in Williamsburg Brooklyn with a group exhibition of paintings, photographs, and works on paper by an international roster of artists, including:

Wenda Gu, Ryoji Ikeda, Masayuki Kawai, Peter Lew, Warren Neidich, Tony Oursler, Gae Savannah, Lewis Stein, Emil Memon, Jeremy Stenger, Wang Qingsong, Zhao Bandi, and Zhou Tiehai.

In addition, there are special artists projects comprised of audio pieces, limited edition artists books, wearable art, and DVD videos by Mark Amerika, David Henry Brown, Jr., Chrissy Conant, Eduardo Kac, and a special New York premiere of “Soft_Cinema”, DVD video and photographs by Lev Manovich (author of “The Language of New Media”, MIT Press, 2002).

Without offering up an over-arching thematic thread to tie the works together, the works represent, instead, cross-currents of thoughts, ideologies, propositions as to the cross-influences that western culture (represented by industrialization, commodity culture, and the global, media-influenced society) has impacted upon eastern culture, society, and artistic modes of representation.

As a counterpoint, the works of western artists reflect a scholarly preoccupation with a spiritualized, meditative, lyrical exploration into the inner workings of the world of man, the elemental forces of nature, and finally, the universe at large.

The gallery exhibits works of contemporary chinese artists alongside those of international contemporary artists in order to juxtapose the varying social, economic and political situations that manifest themselves through the art.
